Banque de Syrie, Syria, specimen 50 Piastres, Beyrouth, 1st August 1919, This 50 Piastres note stands as a testament to the historical and cultural crossroads that defined Syria during the early French Mandate. Its vibrant colour palette-brown, green, yellow, blue, red, and orange-invites attention while reflecting the artistic precision characteristic of the Banque de Syrie's early issues.

On the obverse, the design harmonises historical and architectural elements. Dominating the composition is the head of a lion from the frieze of the Temple of Jupiter in Baalbeck, a potent symbol of resilience and heritage from the ancient Roman era. This is paired with a detailed portrayal of the Tekkiye Mosque in Damascus, an Ottoman masterpiece whose domes and slender minarets evoke the city's long-standing role as a centre of faith and culture.

The reverse offers a more understated elegance, framed by a delicate floral border. At its heart lies a series of arched mihrab wall niches, an iconic feature of Islamic architecture, symbolising devotion and the intricate beauty of sacred spaces. Arabic and French inscriptions complete the note's design, reflecting the bilingual administration of the region during this transformative period.

Dated 1st August 1919, this specimen was issued at the dawn of the Banque de Syrie's establishment in Beirut.
