ST. VINCENT Early Letters and Handstamps 1796 (26 June) entire letter to Edinburgh, marked p Rose, E. Indiaman", rated "5" and "1/-" and showing "deal.ship lre" h.s. (Robertson S.5). The contents refer to the reinforcement under General Abercrombie and the attack on the enemy stronghold. Photo Estimate £ 200-250 Note: In 1795 the French landed troops and instigated the insurrection of the Caribs. A British force under General Abercrombie, after some months of fighting the French and Carib forces, subdued the latter. The peace was restored in 1796 by the withdrawl of the French to Guadeloupe and the mass deportation of the Caribs (over 5000) to the island of Balliceaux and then to Ruatan Island in the Bay of Honduras.
