London Gazette 1.1.1953 Percy Bertram Boyd Oldfield, Esq, 'For political and public services in Surrey' Captain Percy Bertram Boyd Oldfield, O.B.E.; entered the French Theatre of War May 1915; Lieutenant, London Rifle Brigade, 1916; wounded on the First day of the Somme 1.7.1916 (The Times 10.7.1916 refers); the 5th Battalion was positioned on the left of the Division's attack at Gommecourt and were driven out of enemy trenches with great loss. The Battalion strength at the start of the first day was 23 officers and 803 other ranks, by the end of the day they had suffered some 588 casualties; Captain, 16.8.1917.
