Auction: 4013 - Ancient, English, Foreign and Islamic Coins
Lot: 231
†Henry VI, first reign (1422-61), mule Henry V/VI, Noble, 6.90g., class F/annulet issue, king standing facing in ship, holding sword and shield, mullet and annulet by sword arm, trefoil by shield and on ship's side, quatrefoil over sail, rev. floriated cross with lis at ends, h in centre, annulet in first spandrel, m.m. lis on reverse only (Whitton mule (a); c.f. Schneider 268; N.1374/1414; S.1746/1799), quite a pleasing coin, very fine and clear, an extremely rare and interesting mule Estimate £ 2,000-2,500 It is strange that nobles were struck muling obverse dies of each the last three classes (E, F and G) of Henry V with annulet reverse dies of Henry VI. All such mules are extremely rare and the only other F/annulet mule offered at auction in the last forty years was a coin, struck from the same dies as this piece, in the Pulham Hoard, Christie's, 28 May 1985, lot 32.
