The Beret of a Dieppe Raid VC Winner An Airborne Forces issue red beret, the inside stamped with date 1945, fitted with a Parachute Regiment badge; together with a letter dated 1977 from the original owner, Colonel Patrick Porteus, to the current vendor (2) Estimate £ 600-800 Note: During the Dieppe Raid In August 1942, Captain Porteus, a liaison officer in Lord Lovat's No 4 Commando, took command of a section at a very critical moment, and despite twice being wounded succeeded in demolishing a German battery of six guns and inflicting heavy casualties on the defenders. Had this battery not been silenced the casualties to the raiders would have been even greater than they were. The citation noted that Captain Porteus's most gallant conduct, his brilliant leadership and tenacious devotion to a duty which was supplementary to the role originally assigned to him was an inspiration to the whole detachment. After his investiture, Porteus's only comment was: "It was just luck I got the award."
