A Memento of a Canadian VC Winner A woollen tie in Rob Roy tartan; a signed photograph of Major FA Tilston in uniform, wearing the tie; and a letter from him, dated 1977, to the current vendor, explaining that it was customary in some Canadian units to wear ties of regimental tartan with khaki Service Dress (3) Estimate £ 80-120 Note: On 1st March 1945, Major Frederick Tilston of the Essex Scottish Regiment, Canadian Infantry Corps, led his company in an attack in the Hochwald Forest. Despite being wounded in the head, he was the first man to reach the enemy position, having negotiated a ten-foot belt of barbed wire, and personally silenced a machine gun. He was wounded again but pressed on to the next objective, and even when wounded for a third time and barely conscious, he refused medical attention until certain that the position was secure.
