A Memento of a Royal Navy Submarine VC Winner A pair of blue cloth shoulder-boards with Captain's gold lace stripes which belonged to Rear Admiral A.C.C. Miers, reputedly the greatest of submarine commanders, together with a photograph of Miers in tropical uniform; and a letter from him, dated 1977, to the current vendor (3) Estimate £ 300-450 Note: As captain of HMS Torbay in March 1942, Commander Miers followed an enemy convoy into Corfu harbour and fired torpedoes at a destroyer and two large transport vessels, hitting the latter and probably sinking it, before withdrawing successfully to the open sea, despite being subjected to forty depth-charge attacks. By coincidence, HMS Torbay was one of two submarines which in the autumn of 1941 landed Geoffrey Keyes and his commandos on the North African coast two hundred and fifty miles behind enemy lines, on their mission to kill or capture Rommel in his headquarters (see lot 307 below)
