Mementoes of a Durham Light Infantry VC Winner A signed photograph of Captain Dick Annand VC; six brass tunic buttons of the DLI; and a letter dated 1977 from Captain Annand to the current vendor (lot) Estimate £ 60-80 Note: Captain Annand was the first VC winner of World War II. On the 15th May 1940, near the River Dyle, he made a series of successful grenade attacks against the enemy. When his platoon was ordered to withdraw, Annand discovered that his batman was missing, and, although himself wounded, immediately returned to look for him. Having found the man, who was unable to walk, Annand brought him back in a wheelbarrow before collapsing from loss of blood.
