Great Britain. World War I. Large Rondel Insignia from a Vickers F.B.5 "Gunbus", ca. 1915. Large piece of canvas, 5'5" square, cut from the bottom wing. The Gunbus which bore this insignia was believed to have been forced down in France or the Low Countries. This piece and the tail canvas offered below were found in a barn in Germany. By dint of it being the first aircraft purpose-built for air-to-air combat to see service, the Vickers Fighting Biplane 5 is the world's first operational fighting aircraft. A two-seater, it was armed with a single .303 in Lewis gun which was operated by the observer in front of the nacelle. Well preserved and neatly framed and visible from both sides. An attractive and impressive piece of WWI and aviation history. Est. 7000-8000 Reserve: 6000
