Etat Independant du Congo, Belgian Congo, 10 Francs, Brussels, 7th February 1896, serial number 003867, Series A,
this unique note was part of the first issuance of the Congolese franc, authorised on 7th February 1896. Only 6,985 10-franc notes were issued, and the rarity of this particular note is compounded by the extraordinary fact of it being one of only four known existant notes without cancellation holes.
The obverse face of this note features an illustration of a winged cherub presenting an overflowing cornucopia. Behind the cherub are a train and factory smokestack, symbolising progress and industry. The reverse face displays an allegorical woman in a classical tunic crowned with a laurel wreath. Printed by Waterlow & Sons with signatures from Pochez and Eetvelde
(Pick 1a, BNB B101a), choice fine, some staining and pinholes, rare
