Auction: 390 - Renaissance Plaquettes and Commemorative Medals featuring the Neil A. Goodman Collection - e-Auction
Lot: 190

NETHERLANDS, STEVEN VAN HERWIJCK (ca. 1530-1565/7)
Bacchus. Medal, third quarter 16th Century. Uniface. Silver (or heavy silvered AE), 77mm. Draped bust of Bacchus right, crowned with vines. The inscription BAC-HVS with a flower arrangement has been excised after casting (with visible file marks) along with the signature on the truncation. Cf. Tourneur, V., Révue Bèlge, 1921, p. 50, 35 and pl. IV, 1.
A bronze example of the same size possibly once belonging to the famed Antwerp printer and engraver Huburtus Goltzius (1526-1583) was sold by Morton & Eden, Dec. 8, 2005, lot 47. Apparently there is another one at the Bibliothèque Royale in Brussels also measuring 77mm with the signature on the truncation, while a further specimen had been in the collection of Jacques and Gallila Hollander, which was included in a lot of three pieces from the series in the Christie's sale, October 16, 2013, lot 129. A Very Fine early/contemporary cast.
