Elizabeth of Bohemia (1596-1662), Countess Palatine and Winter Queen, Oval Vanitas Medal, c. 1619. Bronze, 32 x 37mm. QVAESIM POST TERGAVIDERIS, bust right wearing a coronet and pearl necklace with pendant resting between her exposed breasts, rev. SIC NVNC PVLCHERRIMA QVONDAM, Skeleton standing left watching an hourglass set on a tomb inscribed: CVM PRIVIL CAES: and signed below C.M. The legend which continues from the obverse translates as "You shall see later on the back who I am, now I am thus, once the most beautiful of all". The tomb legend translates as: "by privilege of the emperor". BDM III, 542 and VIII, 18. Forrer originally misattributes the sitter as Elizabeth of Bohemia (1596-1662), Countess Palatine and Winter Queen. He then reattributes it in the supplementary volume of BDM to Anna Katherina Munk, a daughter of Christian IV of Denmark, but gives no explanation. A Fine contemporary cast.
