ITALY, Venice 16th Century
Attila (ca. 406-453). Medal. Silver, 45mm. ATTILA REX, Cuirassed bust of Attila as a faun right, a horned devil on his breastrev. AQVILEIA, View of the ramparts of the city of Aquilea with five towers, two with upright poles, the central with a banner. Legends divided by triplexes of pellets. According to Attwood ("Italian Medals", no. 411) the Attila medal was produced in large quantities with many variations - this being one of them with different stops in the inscriptions and a totally reworked reverse than that typically found on other specimens. An Extremely Fine old cast.
