Auction: 390 - Renaissance Plaquettes and Commemorative Medals featuring the Neil A. Goodman Collection - e-Auction
Lot: 139
FERRARA SCHOOL (1470-1500)
Bust of a Young Man. Rectangular Medal. Uniface. Bronze, 78.5 x 56.5mm. Bust of a middle-aged man in profile left, wearing a conical cap and a tunic with pleated front. Hill 126; Armand II, 51, 19; Kress 44. Traditionally identified as Agnolo Ambrogini, called Poliziano (1454-1494), but this seems unlikely. Although the medal bears some similarities with NGA 66, the sitter is a different individual; the relief technique is more refined and the medal appears to be unique and unpublished. A thin cast with a hint of incuse on the back. Pierced at top. Dark olive-brown patina. Extremely Fine. WAG Auction 62, September 17, 2012, lot 1540. WAG Auction 48, September 2008, lot 2823. Ex "An Important Collection of Renaissance Medals and Plaquettes", Spink, Sale 193 (London), January 24, 2008, lot 99.
