ITALIAN, Rome, ca. 1575-1600
Virgin and Child with the Infant St. John. Plaquette. Gilt Bronze, 80 x 128mm. This composition exists in several variants - rectangular with an architectural background (some 24 examples), with an integral late Mannerist frame (6 known specimens) and silhouetted or plain background examples such as the one here (8 recorded pieces). The design remained popular into the early 17th Century, as evidenced by a piece in the Louvre bearing the date 1607. Vide John R Gaines, Morton & Eden, December 2005, lot 61; cf.
