Diomedes and the Palladium. Oval plaquette. Bronze, 41.5 x 51mm, Early or Contemporary Cast. Diomedes, one arm draped, holding a sword and Palladium, sits right on a garlanded cubic altar. Molinier 31; Bange 141; Pope Hennessy 257; Ricci ii 37. This piece is a free adaptation of a famed antique chalcedony intaglio signed by Polykleitos and owned by Pope Paul II, then by Lorenzo de'Medici, now in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples.
