Chiara Gonzaga (1464-1503). Medal, Mantua 1496 or after. Bronze, 59mm. CLARA.DE.GONZ.COMITI.MONTPENSERII.T(reversed E).DELPHINA.ALVIE, Bust right, wearing coif over veil, rev. As obverse. cf. Chiara Gonzaga was married in 1481 to Gilbert de Bourbon, Comte de Montpensier and Dauphin d'Auverne. As she wears a widow's veil here, we can date the medal to 1496 - the year of her husband's death or after. This medal is unusual and possibly unique as a double-sided portrait as only uniface specimens or those with muled/alien reverses are recorded. Very Fine.
