AFTER THE MASTER OF THE MARTELLI MIRROR
Allegory of Reproduction. Plaquette after the late 15th-16th Century North Italian (possibly Mantuan) Mirror. Bronze, 170mm. Beneath a term representing the ancient fertility god Priapus, half-length figures face each other: a satyr at left, holding a cup, a Bacchante on the right, pressing milk from her breast; below them a facing bust wearing a headband sits atop a tablet inscribed: NATVRA FOVET / QVAE / NECESSITAS VRGET ("Nature encourages what necessity demands").
