Giulano della Rovere (1443-1513), Bishop of Ostia and Cardinal of San Pietro (later Pope Julius II), and Clemente della Rovere (d. 1504). Medal, (Avignon?) ca 1494/5. Bronze, 61mm. IVLIANVS EPS OSTIEN CAR S P ADVINCVLA, Bust right, tonsured and wearing rochet, rev. CLEMENS DE RV-VERE EPS MIMATEN, Bust right, tonsured and wearing rochet. Hill Corpus 843; Pollard NGA 262; Currency of Fame 38; Scher 85. Giuliano took refuge in France from 1494 to 1498 after he fled Italy following an attempt to depose Pope Alexander VI. His brother Clemente was Papal vice-legate in Avignon. Graffiti (inverted E) on Clemente's cheek. A Very Fine old cast.
