[British Nobles and Politics]: Frances Anne Spencer-Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough (1822-1899). English noblewoman, wife of John Spencer-Churchill, 7th Duke of Marlborough to whom she bore 11 children, grandmother of Winston Churchill. Under her delft hand, Blenheim Palace was rejuvenated with "lavish and exciting entertainments" and transformed into a "social and political focus for the life of the nation". Invested as Lady of the Royal Order of Victoria and Albert for her efforts at famine relief in Ireland. Series of ALS to Mr. Higgs - Rev. Richard William Higgs, Rector of Handborough, Long Handborough. Three letters, each 4 ½ x 7", in her hand to "Dear Mr. Higgs". No year, but ca. 1870s-1880s. A 2 page missive on personal stationary with crowned F-A monogram, and 2 ½ and a 3-page letters on stationary with a crowned double F M monogram. The latter with envelope cover postmarked Woodstock 26 August 1880. Also additional ca. 1870-1880s letters to Mr. Higgs. Four pages, 4 1/3 x 6 7/8, on Blenheim Palace, Woodstock stationary, regarding charitable contributions of the Duke's clothing and a list of recipients for clothing. Signed "Annie Spencer Churchill" possibly Anne Emily Innes-Ker, Duchess of Roxburghe, Frances Anne and John's daughter; and 2 ½ pages on Blenheim palace, Woodstock stationary - "Dear Mr. Higgs, I have got a lot of old cloths of Randolph's he would like given away in Handborough", the writer goes on to ask for a list of people "to whom a few clothes would be acceptable".
