1935 Collier Trophy Award: Letter from Collier Trophy Committee to NAA president Charles F. Horner. One page typed on NAA letterhead, Washington, D.C., April 29, 1936. Charles L. Lawrance, Trophy Committee Chairman reports to Horner that the Committee unanimously decided to award the Collier Trophy for 1935 to Donald W. Douglas, for the development "of the outstanding twin-engined commercial transport airplane." This airplane by reason of its high speed, economy, and quiet passenger comfort, has been generally accepted by transport lines throughout the United States. Its merit has been further recognized by its adoption abroad and its influence on foreign design is already apparent. In making this award, recognition is given to the technical and production personnel of the Douglas organization." Lawrance signs below right, Committee members Powel Crosley, Jr., Fred L. Smith and J.C. Hunsaker sign below left. Aeronautical engineer Charles Lanier Lawrance (1882-1950) was an early proponent of air-cooled aircraft engines. Powel Crosley. Jr. (1886-1961), inventor, industrialist and entrepreneur; pioneer in radio broadcasting, owner of the Cincinnati Reds, his companies manufactured Crosley automobiles and radios; Jerome C. Hunsaker (1886-1984), as a member of the 1917 Joint Army & Navy Technical Board helped create a U.S. aircraft program; president Goodyear-Zeppelin Co., head of MIT's Mechanical Engineering Dept., later Chairman of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics.
