Daniel Webster (American Statesman) (1782-1852) - folded, dated Washington, May 16, 1836,addressed to John McLaren Esq. in Wheeling, Virginia, introducting Thomas H. Perkins of Boston "a gentleman of first rate standing and character, and well known in most parts of the United States, but has heretofore never been in the Western Country," requesting that recipient meet with him on his travels in that part of the country, letter text in a secretarial hand, but signed by Webster, with his free frank "Daniel Webster" on letter front. Thomas Handasyd Perkins was a wealthy Boston merchant, having built a fortune in the slave, fur, and China trade. Typical filing folds, most noticable on front, not detracting from the contents. An attractive Webster letter, from the time when he was serving as Chair of the Senate Finance Committee.
