Vanderbilt, Cornelius (1794-1877). "The Commodore", noted American business magnate who built his wealth from railroads and shipping; one of the richest Americans in history, patriarch of the influential Vanderbilt family. Letter Signed "C VanDerbilt". One-page on folded 8x10" lined paper, New York, March 19, 1874. Addressing G.H. Perry, Secretary of the Rensselaer & Saratoga RR Co, Vanderbilt says he has received the notice of the special meeting. "In as much as it is impossible for me to give the attention to the Company & Road that is expected from a Director, I hereby tender my resignation as a Director Very respectfully your humble servt".
