Hanson, John (1721-1783). First President of the Continental Congress under the Articles of Confederation; Maryland merchant and public official during Revolutionary era, delegate to the Continental Congress, signer of the Articles of Confederation. Document Signed "John Hanson Jr" (Hanson was often referred to as John Hanson, Jr. to distinguish him from an older man of the same name, and Hanson adopted the practice). Pay receipt, 1 ½ x 6". "Received March 26, 1779 of Mr. Westem Then Treasurer fifty four Pound for Mr. Jn Ross Key his allowance and eighty four Pounds my allowance on journal March Session", Hanson signs in brown below. John Ross Key (1754-1821), lawyer and officer in the Continental Army, was the father of Francis Scott Key. On verso: "Received 25 - March 1779 of the Treasurer Twenty six pounds fifteen Shillings my allowance on Journal - Dec.r. Oct.r. 1779 Charles Ridgley -- Received 25th March 1779 of the treasurer the Sum of Thirteen pounds and six Shillings". The autograph of John Hanson is very rare and much sought after by collectors.
