Dumas, Alexandre (1802-1870). Famed French writer, known for his historical novels of high adventure -- the Count of Monte Cristo, and the three books of the d'Artagnan Romances. Autograph Letter Signed set into the title page of volume I of Les Trois Mousquetaires. Chez Calmann Levy, Paris 1894. Two volumes. First illustrated edition. Illustrations by Maurice Leloir. One-quarter red morocco covers with marbled board, raised spine bands. Ex Libris inside cover. Undated, in French, on 4 ¼ x 5 1/2" blue paper, Dumas writes to Arnaud: "You're not forgotten once you are loved - you are always loved, when you've been loved. Tonight or tomorrow you are going to [illegible]. I would like to be the last to tell you I love you when you leave and the first to tell you I love you upon your return". Dumas signs below "A Dumas". Additionally, a small format Autograph Letter Signed by the prolific illustrator Maurice Leloir is set above Dumas' letter. On green paper, in French, Leloir writes Mr. Anzoli: "I am in need for the watercolor exhibition that opens on the 17th of this month at Galerie Petit of several re-framings, in frames that you made for me. These are merely reconciliations, but I would be very grateful if you would send your son to get them as soon as possible. There are 5 frames from last year to recut in one direction; I also need to cut glass and cardboard and to make bronze Bristol board mats. I fear that one hook is a bit on the short side, unless your son brings me a diamond saw blade and we cut the glass here, or I do the final framing myself". Leloir send his kindest regard and signs below "Maurice Leloir". Both letters Very Fine. Both volumes of the book included, a few small scuffs to cover, and a few nicks to frontispages, a Very good edition.
