American industrialist, inventor, philanthropist and politician; designed and built America's first steam locomotive - the Tom Thumb; founded the Cooper Union for the advancement of Science and Art; Greenback Party's candidate in the 1876 presidential election. Document Signed "Peter Cooper" as President of the Board of Cooper Union. On Cooper Union letterhead, 7 7/8 x 9 7/8", June 14, 1881 - receipt for the gift of 2 volumes of "The Naturalist" and volume from the Boston Journal of Chemistry. Cooper signs in large hand below in black. Six foldlines. Fine.
