Great Britain. 1908 Pattern Cavalry Trooper's Sword. By Wilkinson, October 1915. Large steel bowl guard, semi-pistol-configured, crosshatch cut grip. "Spear point" 34 ½" blade with deep fullers, maker's name at ricasso. Metal scabbard, stamped "P.L.D.S. 22" near opening, set ring mount either side. As a result of the failure of the 1899 Pattern cavalry sword in the Second Boer War a movement was launched to improve the overall design of cavalry service swords. Committees were established and unlike previous sword designs which were done by cutlers, the emergent new sword design took a very scientific approach. The 1908 Pattern proved very successful. Some light scuffing to scabbard, otherwise a Very Fine example.
