Great Britain. Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Victoria. To: 147 C. SERGT. J. GIFFORD 74TH FOOT, impressed. Born in Glasgow, John Gifford joined the 74th Highlander Regiment of Foot in 1857 at age 20, going on to serve for 20 years. He was promoted to Corporal in 1862, Sergeant 1863 and appointed Colour Sergeant 1864 before reverting to Sergeant the next year. In 1876, he was transferred to the 59th Brigade as Sergeant Major, and to the Renfrew Militia in 1878, a half year before his discharge. Included are copies of his discharge documents. On riband.
