Great Britain. A Great War Flying M.C. Group of Four to J.A. Middleton, Royal Field Artillery, late Royal Air Force, Pilot 101st Squadron - injured April 23, 1918. Military Cross, M.C., G.V.R. - the back contemporary engraved (CAPT. J.A. MIDDLETON R.F.A. SEPT. 4TH 1918); 1914-15 Star (2. LIEUT. J.A. MIDDLETON R.F.A.); War (erased) and Victory (CAPT. J.A. MIDDLETON.) Medals.
Born July 17, 1893 in Leyland, Lancashire and educated at Marlborough, Middleton served in Gallipoli and Egypt with the East Lancashire Brigade (Bolton Artillery) R.F.A. He secured a secondment to the R.F.C, October 1916 and was confirmed and gazetted a Flying Officer, accompanying the FEB2b-equipped 101st (Night-Bombing) Squadron to France as a "founder member" on July 25, 1917. He earned his M.C., "London Gazette", April 22, 1918, "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On one occasion he made two successive attacks on an enemy aerodrome, and despite a mist and the intense activity of hostile aircraft, dropped his bombs, obtaining two direct hits on the hangars. On a later occasion, during a gale, he made two journeys to bomb enemy rest billets, obtaining several direct hits on his objectives and attacking hostile transport on the roads with machine-gun fire. He has at all times shown great courage and skill and has set an example which has been of great value to his squadron." Middleton was injured in a crash on the outward leg of a bombing raid, April 22-23, 1918.
