Wallace, Lewis "Lew". (1827-1905). Lawyer, politician, soldier, Union General in the Civil War, Governor of the New Mexico Territory (1878-1881), US Minister to the Ottoman Empire (1881-1885), author best known for his 1880 work "Ben-Hur. A Tale of Christ". Autograph Letter Signed "Lew. Wallace". 1 ½ pages, 5 7/8 x 9 3/8", Crawfordsville, (Indiana) Sept. 4, 1884. Wallace writes to B.F. Jones, Chairman of the Republican Nation Congress. He acknowledges receipt of the Committee's invitation to "take part in the canvass" and notes he will be at their service after taking care of some appointments. He believes he can be most effective working at home in Indiana, and ends saying "The situation looks promising in that part of the field". Pencil notation at top, faint ink smear. Fine. Scarce ALS.
