War Eagle Gold Mining Company (New York) 1866. Mines located 70 miles south west of Boise, Idaho on the Owyhee Gold Trend of the Silver City Mining District. 31 shares. No.44. Black text on gold underprint. Red corporate seal. 25 Cents revenue stamp tied to the certificate with a round War Eagle rubber stamp impression. A truly magnificent 9 ½" x 7 ½" vignette of a bald eagle occupies a major portion of the certificate. N.Y. Printing Co., 40 Ann St., NY. Fully issued, not cancelled. Very Fine details, with fold and edge splits. Three years after this mine was incorporated, War Eagle Mountain became the site of an underground battle field. Thousands of shots were fired in a dispute over which mines had legitimate claims to gold veins that ran through shafts that were owned by competing interests. The Territorial Governor finally ordered armed troops to intercede. A brief peace ensued, but it was followed by more murder and mayhem. It was the kind of stuff that you would expect to see in a Wild West movie script. It may be decades before another example of this wonderful mining stock comes on the market. One of the most visually attractive mining stocks of this genre we have ever handled, and perhaps unique.
