American Revolution; U.S leaders: Joel R. Poinsett (1779-1851). Diplomat; member of the House of Representatives for South Carolina, U.S. Minister to Mexico (1825-1829); Secretary of War (1837-1841). Document Signed "J.R. Poinsett" as Secretary of War. Partially printed, one and a half pages, folio, on War Department Stationery, Oct. 3, 1837. Revolutionary Claim of Abram Leeds of Connecticut, "who was a private in the Army of the Revolution" stating he is entitled to "Eighty dollars per annum during his natural life, commencing on the 4th of March, 1831". Poinsett signs below, J.L. Edwards, Commissioner of Pensions (the first to hold that position) signs lower left, paper seal affixed above. Payment and Recorder's notation on folded outer page. Four horizontal folds with splits, tear bottom outer page. Very Good. Ex Evans Kerrigan Collection.
