Sheridan, Philip Henry (1831-1888). Career U.S. Army officer, Union General in the Civil War, used scorched earth tactics to destroy the economic infrastructure of the Shenandoah Valley, his cavalry pursued Robert E. lee and helped force Lee's surrender at Appomattox; on Nov. 1, 1883, succeeded William T. Sherman as Commanding General of the United States Army. Autograph. 7 x 3 1/3" bottom segment cut from letter. Sheridan signs as Commander of the US Army "Very respectfully / Your obedient servant, / P.H. Sheridan / Lieutenant General / Commanding" (thus dating this to 1884-1888).
