Root, Elihu (1845-1937). Prominent lawyer and statesman, junior defense counsel for "Boss" Tweed in his corruption trial, Secretary of War (1899-1904), Secretary of State (1905-1909), Senator from NY (1909-1915), awarded Nobel Peace Prize in 1912. Autograph Letter Signed "Elihu Root" as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Two pages on United States Attorney's Office letterhead, July 18, 1884. Writing to Hon. S.B. Elkins (Stephen Benton Elkins, the West Virginia industrialist, later Secretary of War), he notes that a Mr. Davenport has given him "a statement of things necessary… to prevent fraud", hopes that Elkins appreciates "the great importance of these things. They have given us our only chance for a fair ballot…" Accompanied by US Attorney's Office envelope. Very Fine.
