Johnson, Andrew. 17th President of the United States (1865-1869), Vice President at the time of Lincoln's assassination, Military Governor of Tennessee (1862-1865), War Democrat and Southern Unionist, opposed 14th Amendment, attempted to dismiss Secretary of War Stanton, impeached by House of Representatives and narrowly avoiding conviction and removal from office, later Senator from Tennessee. Document Signed "Andrew Johnson" as President. Folio, one page, on vellum, June 18, 1868. Military Commission, conferring of the rank of Major to William P. Huxford by brevet March 7, 1867 "for gallant and meritorious service in the assault of Port Hudson Louisiana" (May 22-July 9, 1863). 'The President of the United States of America' title and eagle at top. Johnson signs in black lower right, John McAllister Schofield, Secretary of War signs "J.M. Schofield" to left. Embossed blue paper seal (folded over) upper left; Arms at bottom. Recorder's notation in red ink upper left signed in dark brown by Assistant Adjutant General E.D. Townsend.
