World War I. Erny St. Julien. Oct. 2, 1917. Watercolor by J.E. Tindall. 4 ¾ x 6 ¾". View from the Calvary on the hill. Matted with typed narrative below: "Having moved out of line for a week's "rest" we were employed in laying out a reserve line of trenches on the heights above Erny St. Julien. From LAIRES through the distant woods at the top of the picture, down through the quaint village in the valley and then up the steep hill path in the foreground was a wonderful ride each day to the works". On the back Tindall writes in pencil "The lonely path ALONENESS The Solitary way".
