Great Britain. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Officer's Dirk. Ca. 1882-1900. By Marshall & Sons, 87 George St., Edinburgh. Black wood carved hilt with basket dressing and silver studs, pommel cap of the dirk, fork and knife set with orange Cairngorm stones, interlocking pattern silver trim around dirk stone, wreath trim around knife and fork. 11 ¾" saw-backed blade with two fullers; the front etched displaying crown, royal cipher, boar's head (Argyll) with motto "Ne Obliviscaris" and floral pattern, back similar except with wild cat (Sutherland) and motto "Sans Peur", maker' name in ricasso. Leather scabbard with silver mounts - top with crowned royal cipher and entwined serpent with two heads representing eternity, the middle with entwined serpent, boar's head and motto, the lower with entwined serpent, cat and motto; tipped by eternity serpent. Maker's name again on back of top mount. A pleasing dirk in excellent condition.
