1846 (struck late 1850) Mexican War - Loss of the Somers Medal. Julian NA-24b. Silver, 57.7mm. By Charles Cushing Wright. Sinking ship; SOMERS NAVIS AMERICANA; ANTE VERA CRUZ DEC. 10TH 1846 in ex., rev. Scene of lifeboats heading toward sinking ships; PRO VITIS AMERICANORUM CONSERVATIS; ENG. BY. C.C. WRIGHT. in ex. While chasing a blockade runner off Vera Cruz on Dec. 8, 1846, the brig "U.S.S. Somers" capsized and foundered. Of the crew, 32 died, seven were rescued. On March 3, 1847, Congress authorized medals to be struck to present to those who participated in life-saving efforts. Scratches on edge at 11:00. Toned. Good Very Fine.
