Custer, George Armstrong. Indian Campaign date. Autographed Military Envelope. 8 1/2" by 3 3/4". "30/12/68" in brown ink, upper left, just below an illegible entry in brown ink. "Headquarters Department of the Missouri, / IN THE FIELD / OFFICIAL BUSINESS" is crossed out at upper right. The address is written in ink by George Armstrong Custer to "Mrs. Genl GACuster [George Armstrong] / Fort Leavenworth. / Kas." Written after the Battle of Washita River. General Sheridan and Custer met about one week before this was written, and they discussed how best to carry out orders from Washington to "kill and punish the hostiles[Indians], rescue the captive white women and children, capture and destroy the ponies."
