Carte de la Louisiane et du Cours du Mississippi. First edition, first state. Guillaume Delisle. Paris, G. Delisle, 1718. 25 5/8 x 19 ½", black and white. Delisle is known as the "Father of Scientific Cartography", and this his Carte de la Louisiane is seminal in the history of mapping America because of his pioneering method, sound scientific principles and attitude. A major source for all later maps of the Mississippi and the western part of the United States, this map was the first to include the name "Texas" with the legend "Mission de las Teijas", indicating the mission established in 1716. It also contains the first indications of the explorations of De Soto, Cavelier, Tonty, Moscoso and Denis; and the best depiction of the Mississippi to date. Matted. A Fine map with good margins.
