France. Display of Brocade, Cloth and Metal Insiginia from the Uniform of Marshal Nicolas Oudinot, First Comte Oudinot, 1st Duc de Reggio, (1767-1848). Silver brocade on black cloth collar and cuffs, four embroidered insignia, two embroidered shoulder bars and 11 gilt buttons, and brass descriptive placard displayed in an attractive wood frame. The items were displayed at the Military Exposition in Paris, 1889. Nicolas Charles Oudinot was General André Masséna's right hand during the Swiss campaign of 1799, first as general of division, then chief of staff. He won extraordinary distinction at the Second Battle of Zürich. At the Battle of Manzambano, he distinguished himself so that Napoleon presented him with the Sword of Honor. Wounded at least 34 times in battle - bullets, artillery shells, saber slashes and thrusts, Oudinot was promoted to Marshal of France after displaying dazzling courage at the Battle of Wagram. From 1810 to 1812, he administered the former Kingdom of Holland. Very well preserved. Frame, 25 ½ x 18 ¾" (glass is clouding). An interesting and attractive centerpiece. From the collection of the 19th Century French military painter Raymond Desvarreux (1876-1961).
