Boss Tweed Ring Framed Items. 1) New York County Bond for the Repayment of Taxes. 1867. $700. Blue text and images, red seal. Signed by John Hoffman as mayor, and Richard (Slippery Dick) Connelly as comptroller. 2) Document signed by William Marcy Tweed as Street Commissioner. 3) "Harper's Weekly" May 18, 1872, front page. An allegorical woman representing "New York" holds a reform bill vetoed by Governor Hoffman, while the Tweed ring stands by. All beautifully mounted and framed. The overall dimensions 35" x 28." John T. Hoffman was a serious candidate for the Presidency during 1862. Despite a lack of hard evidence, his reputation was damaged by his connections with Tweed Ring Members. Richard Connelly was arrested and indicted on 15 counts of various charges. He left the country, never to return. William Marcy Tweed was the alleged "Boss" of a massive Tammany Hall ring of corruption. While seemingly unimportant, it was the Street Commissioner who approved fiscal spending. While Tweed was only convicted of a minor charge of "failing to audit," he allegedly received millions in under the table kickbacks.
