Gladstone, William Ewart. December 29, 1809-May 19, 1898). FRS, FSS. British Liberal politician who served as Prime Minister an unprecedented four separate times (1868-74, 1880-85, February-July 1886 and 1892-94), and was Chancellor of the Exchequer four times. At the age of 84, Gladstone was also Britain's oldest Prime Minister. ALS. 8vo. 3 pages. December 4, 1879. Taymouth Castle, Aberfeldy, Perthshire. To James Murchison?, turning down a request to deliver a public address, and conveying his wishes for success in the upcoming elections. Also included is a photograph of Gladstone taken in 1859 by Maull & Polyblank, in very good condition, but with torn margins, an 1882 extract from Vanity Fair entitled "Mr. Gladstone at Hawarden," and an 1869 Vanity Fair caricature of Gladstone.
