Colonial America. Edward Hyde, Lord Cornbury. Governor of New York and New Jersey, cousin to Queen Anne. Characterized by historians as an arrogant "fop and wastrel", moral profligate and cross-dresser, Lord Cornbury, who preferred to be called "high Mightiness", was perhaps the worst governor appointed to the American colonies and certainly - thanks to his penchant for appearing in public in women's clothing and his extravagance -- the most scandalous and curious. Document Signed as Governor of New York -- "Cornbury". Two pages, 8 x 13" and tipped onto a slightly larger sheet, New York, October 17, 1703. Last Will and Testament of "Thomas Howardson of the City of New York in America, merchant" noting that one of the witnesses, William Sharpas has sworn that Howardson was of "sound and perfect understanding" when making his will. Cornbury signs boldly at bottom, small wafer seal by Howardson signature. A Very fine and Choice document.
