Born in England, William Massey was the son of a brewer from Stoke, who moved to Philadelphia when William was quite young. After serving an apprenticeship in Gray's Brewery, he eventually was offered a partnership in Poultney, Collins & Massey, and subsequently gained full ownership. In 1877, William Massey Brewing Company was the eleventh largest brewer in the United States.
