                        Berthier, Louis-Alexandre (1753-1815). First Prince de Wagram, 1st Duc de Valengin, 1st Sovereign duc de Neuchâtel. Chief of Staff to Napoleon and often called his "right-hand man," assisted in the coup d'etat of 18 Brumaire, becoming Minister of War for a time; Marshal and Vice-Constable of France. Autograph Letter Signed "Alex Berthier" as Minister of War. One page on Ministerial letterhead, 7 ¼ x 9 ½". Dated Paris, Thermidor An 9 (Aug. 10, 1801). In it, Berthier acknowledges a report by the instructor of the training school for light cavalry at Versailles and voices his satisfaction with the methods applied at this school.
