Varick, Richard (March 15, 1753 - July 30, 1831). Revolutioary War soldier. Feb. 9, 1829. Treasurer of the City of New York check, issued to Richard Varick and signed by with a huge signature of Varick on the verso. Hammer cancel, and a few pinholes, otherwise Very Fine. Captain of the 1st New York Regiment, Varick served under General Philip Schuyler in various posts until after the Battle of Saratoga when he was appointed inspector-general of West Point, where he became an aide to Benedict Arnold. When Arnold defected, Varick was arrested, but he was later cleared by a court of inquiry. He then served under General George Washington as private secretary until the end of the war. A street in New York City is named after Varick (and another is named after Bleecker, who signs this check as Comptroller). An engraving of Varick is included. From the collection of John Herzog.
