Sherman, William T. (February 8, 1820-February 14, 1891). Autographed Letter Signed "W. T. Sherman." 8vo, 3/4 page on imprinted "Banking House of Lucas, Turner & Co" stationery. San Francisco. April 1, 1856. To "My Dear Stevens" (perhaps Lieutenat T. H. Steven, who rented a house from him). "I have received the enclosed note from Colonel Nanman, and I must [beg] you to release me from the unpleasant position in which I am placed as a guarantor of the loan." Sherman was a managing partner in Lucas, Turner & Co., which was a California branch of these St. Louis-based bankers. In 1857 a San Francisco bank panic forced the company to go out of business in California. Sherman's signature is rarely encountered on bank-related matters. Ex. R. M. Smythe & Co. November 29, 2001 sale. From the collection of John Herzog.
