Root, George F. (August 30, 1820 - August 6, 1895). Civil War American composer of widely popular patriotic songs. He wrote Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, the Boys are Marching; The Battle Cry of Freedom and Just Before the Battle, Mother. Uncommon musical Autograph Quotation Signed. 1 page. Oblong narrow 12 mo. He pens "Yes we'll rally round the flag, boys!" signed "Geo. F. Root," and dated March 1895, just a month before he died. Mounting traces on the verso, and the ink is a bit light, but still quite desirable. Ex. Lot 74, R. M. Smythe November 10, 1998 where it realized $300. From the collection of Diana Herzog.
