Mill, John Stuart (May 20,1806-May 8,1873). English philosopher, political economist, feminist, and civil servant. Foremost developer and advocate of the Utilitarian doctrine, "greatest good for the greatest number." Third-person Autograph Letter Signed "Mr. Mill" in the body of the letter. 1/4 page, 8vo. Avignon, (France). November 3, 1866. Mill "presents his compliments to Mr. [Thomas C. ] Ryley and incloses a cheque for the Garrison Testimonial..." With the front panel of the original envelope in Mill's hand. Each are tipped to a slightly larger sheet. In very good condition. The testimonial mentioned was probably for abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison. Ex. R. M. Smythe May 12, 2004 auction. From the Collection of John Herzog.
